Testing Files with TeraCopy
Updated over 3 months ago

This function lets you check the integrity/readability of your files, which is especially useful with less reliable media like flash drives.

  1. Create a file list with files that require testing.

    • Using the Explorer context menu:

      • Right-click on the selected file(s) and select TeraCopy...

    • Using Start Menu:

      • Press the Windows button and type TeraCopy.

      • Click the Source button and select Add file/folders...

  2. Click the Test button to read all files from the disk and generate checksums.

  3. Click the Save hash button to save the checksum file in the source directory.

Test File Against Clipboard Checksum

  1. Right-click on the selected file and choose TeraCopy...

  2. Click the Verify button.

  3. TeraCopy will automatically detect the appropriate checksum method.

  4. The file will be tested, and the resulting checksum will be compared with the one in the clipboard.

  5. A message will indicate whether the checksums match or not.

Store/Verify Checksum in ADS

If the 'Store/Verify Checksum in ADS' option is enabled, TeraCopy saves the checksum and file timestamps to the Alternate Data Streams after testing. If future tests detect a checksum change but the timestamp remains the same, TeraCopy will show an error, indicating possible data corruption.

Options

To change from default xxHash3-64 to another hash method, click on the Options tab. To save this option permanently, click on the Save as Default button.

MD5 is the most commonly used method, use it if you want to pass .md5 files to other people or applications.

xxHash 3 and BLAKE3 are the less common, but faster hash methods.
