Using Snippets
Updated over a month ago

The Snippets tab in Direct Folders Configuration allows you to customize and manage shortcuts for easily accessing and pasting Markdown files into any application. This is particularly helpful if you frequently use pre-defined text or documents and want to save time by quickly pasting snippets with a simple hotkey or mouse gesture.

Configuration

To configure snippets settings in Direct Folders, right-click on the tray icon and select Configure.... Then, navigate to the Snippets tab to access and adjust the following settings:

Snippets Menu Activation

  • Activate by double-pressing: Activate the snippets menu by double-pressing a key of your choice. The default key is Shift, but you can change it to Control, Caps Lock, or Esc to suit your preferences.

  • Hotkey Activation: Set up a custom hotkey to trigger the snippets menu. This offers flexibility for users who prefer a specific key combination for quick access.

Markdown Files Section

  • Markdown Files Folder: Specify the directory where your Markdown files are stored. This allows Direct Folders to quickly load and display these files for use as snippets. Click on the [...] button to browse and select the folder path.

  • Attachments Folder: Set the folder for any attachments linked within your Markdown files. Keeping attachments organized separately helps maintain a clean workspace.

Additional Actions

  • Create a Sample File: Generate a sample Markdown file in your designated folder. This is especially helpful if you are new to this feature and need a template file to understand how it works.

How to Use Snippets

  • Activate the Menu: Double-press the Shift key or use the hotkey you configured to activate the snippets menu.

  • Select a Snippet: Once activated, the menu will display all Markdown files from your selected folder. Choose a file to instantly paste its content into the currently active application window.

  • Attachments Handling: Any images linked in your Markdown files will be automatically encoded in base64 format for easy insertion.

  • Template Processing: Direct Folders supports basic templates like {clipboard}, {date}, and {time}. These placeholders will be replaced with the corresponding values when the snippet is pasted.
